Four separate blasts on Turkey's popular coastal region and in the country's commercial capital Istanbul injured at least 22 people, state news agency Anatolian reported today.

Anatolian said three blasts occurred near the southern coastal area of Marmaris early today and another in Istanbul late yesterday.

The British Foreign office said 10 British tourists were among the wounded. There were no immediate claims of responsibility and the authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Marmaris is a coastal resort popular with west European and Russian tourists as well as Turks.

Kurdish separatists, leftists and Islamic militants have carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in the past. The tourist industry is a powerful motor of the Turkish economy.

So what's going on here? How many times have you watched fellow passengers cart aboard luggage that's way in excess of the stated carry-on limits? On Pacific island routes, for example, the amount of stuff allowed into the aircraft cabin is simply amazing, particularly the presence of those voluminous plastic bags known colloquially as 'Pacific Louis Vuitton'."

Stansted airport is usually the cheapest London airport to fly from, as it is the airport that most of the budget airlines fly from. I use it regularly. I used to avoid the early and late arrivals, assuming that getting to and from the airport would be too difficult, however I've found that it's quite achievable. It's definitely worth trying out a few 1p 6.30am flights!

I can offer the following tips for using Stansted efficiently:

Getting to and from the airport:
Virtually all my flights leave before 8am and arrive after 11pm, as these are the cheapest. This can make transport difficult, as I don't have a car. There are 3 options for early/late arrivals and departures.

Terravision
I personally use Terravision Coaches and heartily recommend them. They leave from London Victoria and go direct to the airport without stopping. It takes 1hour 15 minutes off-peak . I couldn't say how long it takes in peak hours, or any time after 7am or before 10pm, as I have never used them then, but I assume it takes a fair while longer. The route goes through central London along the Embankment and out through Canary Wharf to Stratford (which is, incidentally, quite a scenic route for tourists), so I imagine the traffic can be pretty horrendous. They cost £8.50 each way and run once or twice an hour, and you can either book in advance on-line or pay in person at the stop. I recommend buying online, because you get priority seating. You should let the person selling tickets on the bus know you have pre-booked, because otherwise they will not ask if anyone has tickets and when it's busy you run the risk of the bus filling up before you get on. Their website is www.terravision.it. They also provide coach services at some Italian airports served by the budget airlines flying out of Stansted (Rome, Milan, Florence, & Pisa).

National Express
National Express run from London Victoria and make several stops throughout London via Golders Green. They also operate a service from Stratford. National Express are slightly more expensive than Terravision (between £8 and £10 depending on where you get on), and slower, because they stop more often. They also run more often. Again, you can book online or pay on the bus. The only reason I personally no longer use them is because the Terravision Coach is more convenient for me. Tickets and timetables can be found on their website at http://www.nationalexpress.com/destinations/airports/stansted/index.cfm

Stansted Express
Stansted Express now run a coach throughout the night and on days when the train doesn't run. It runs every half hour from Liverpool Street, although it does not stop at Tottenham Hale the way the train does. I believe the fare is the same as for the train, which is £24 return, although if you are using the coach both ways you can get a special ticket for £15 onboard the bus, which is not valid on the train. Tickets and timetables can be found on their website at http://www.stanstedexpress.co.uk/, although they do not have an e-ticket service the way the other two companies do, nor will they send you paper tickets. The only way you can prebook tickets is to collect the tickets on the day from the special machines at Liverpool Street or the airport. NB for some strange reason you cannot pick up tickets from Tottenham Hale. I think if you use a booking engine like the Trainline.com you can have tickets posted to you if you book far enough in advance.

Due to the horrendous nature of London traffic, if the trains are running I take the trains, even though it is more expensive (catching the tube to Tottenham Hale and transferring to the Stansted Express works out the fastest for me). The Stansted Express departs from Liverpool Street every 15 mintues during the day and every half hour during the evenings. Journey time from Liverpool Street is 45 minutes, or 34 minutes from Tottenham Hale. Fares are £14.50 single /£24 return.

There are also trains to destinations other than London - I assume you can get details from journey planner websites like www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Leaving the airport by coach or train is simple - the train station is directly underneath the airport itself, and the coach station is directly outside. So it is only 5 minutes from picking up your luggage to your chosen form of transport.

Beware - particularly just after the trains stop running in the evening - there can be long queues for the coaches. If you have a ticket let the person managing the queue know you have one, as you will probably be allowed to jump the queue and get straight on the coach. Many people don't realise the trains don't run all night and wind up wandering around looking for the right bus.

At the airport : Departures
Early morning arrivals at the airport can be surprisingly hectic. I always try and check in 2 hours before departure, so as to leave plenty of time for transport disasters, plus having a low number on your boarding card means you get to board first and a chance at those covetted emergency exit seats with the extra leg room. However, be fully prepared to queue to check in, and then queue even longer to get through security. Even when they have every scanner operating (and there are a lot), it can take over an hour to get through security. It can then take up to 15-20 minutes to get to your gate, depending upon how far away it is. On several occasions I have arrived at the airport 2 hours before departure, to find myself running to the gate to make the boarding time. It's something you need to be prepared for because if you're not it can be quite stressful. Don't assume that because you have a 7am flight that the airport will be quiet! Stansted is most definitely not an airport where you can simply arrive 40 minutes before your flight.

On the plus side, there is a 24 hour cafe before security, so if you do arrive before you can check in, or if you're facing a long queue, you can send a member of your party off for caffeine and munchies to sustain you. It's hidden on the far left hand corner of the airport as you enter, near the domestic flight arrivals gate. The other shops before security are at the far right hand side as you enter, near the arrivals for international flights.

After security there are several cafes that are usually open by the time you get through the security checks and the usual shops. The layout of the airport is quite simple - for some gates you need to use a monorail to get to.

I have never had a flight delayed out of Stansted. In fact, because it's all low cost airlines, my theory is it runs more efficiently beccause everyone's profit margins depend upon quick turn around times. Contrast Heathrow - the last time I flew out of Heathrow the plane was delayed for an hour and a half because all 4 de-icers were empty, because no one had filled them the night before.

Arrivals
If, like me, you are unfortunate enough not to have an EU passport, be prepared to queue for a long time at immigration control. I now keep a stack of arrivals cards with my passport (as the budget airlines often don't have any) which I fill out on the plane to save a few minutes. One benefit of Stansted is that most of the flights are arriving from Europe, so you are unlikely to arrive between long-haul flights where there is a greater chance of refugees and people without papers etc.

Luggage - I usually only have carry on luggage, however on my last flight I had checked in luggage. No one's luggage from any flight arriving at that time (there were at least 6 flights) was being processed. It took over an hour before the luggage started hitting the carousels. I don't know if this is a regular thing or not. I wasn't at all impressed with the service - they continually apologised for the delay but did not once explain why there was a delay, nor how long it was likely to last, which is incredibly infuriating, particularly at 12.30am!

Stansted can get a bad rap - but you have to keep in mind that 5 star service comes with 5 star prices. I'm more than happy with the level of service given the cost of flights.

'I go overseas every eight weeks to the US, China or Europe. Most of the time I use my Visa card to get cash from ATMs,' he says. 'As soon as I am at the airport I get some local currency. While there are some small charges in doing it this way, it is very convenient.'

Hiss, 52, chief executive of Eagle Compact, which manufactures and sells electric golf walking carts to carry your clubs while you stroll the fairways, has no time for travellers' cheques.

'The problem with travellers' cheques is that you have to make a special trip to get the cheques. With my card, I don't have to go to the bank, just straight to the airport. Prepaid cash cards, such as Travelex's Cash Passport and EMerchants' CashCow card are gaining in popularity. The key advantage: you can set a spending limit before you leave.

Travelex charges 1 per cent to load the card and $3.75 for ATM withdrawals, while EMerchants' CashCow card is 25 cents to load and $2 for ATMs.

Travelex Australasia director of business services Nigel Adams says you can put money in Australian dollars, British pounds, euros and American dollars on to your Cash Passport. You can also buy the card in advance when the exchange rate is favourable. His company sells six cards to every one travellers' cheque.

'You can buy a card which is euro-based, then simply find a Visa ATM to dispense your cash,' he says. 'You can also take multiple cards. If you are going to Asia first you could take an Australian-dollar-based card and another in pounds for Britain.'

You can reload the card via your bank, the internet or BPay, using the card number as your reference number. The minimum load is $250, the maximum $25,000. There is no signature panel on the card so if you lose it no one can access your cash unless they have your PIN.

'When we did our research, foremost in people's minds is that the product is convenient to use and secure,' Adams says. 'What people tend to do is use a credit card backed up by a Cash Passport or they put their holiday money onto the Cash Passport.

What are the downsides to prepaid cards?

You have to find the required ATM to withdraw cash. If you are travelling to destinations such as Cambodia, where ATMs are scarce, you may be better off using a combination of travellers' cheques, credit cards and US dollars cash.

Cash is king in many places in the Caribbean, Africa, South America and at Asian markets, Wright says.

How else can you trim costs?

You can make savings by restricting the number of ATM transactions as this form of withdrawal is usually the most expensive.

Today i have been browsing thru some astrological websites reading about eclipses and how that and astrology connects etc.

I happen to click on a link to all the fullmoons for certain years.. and i found out last week that the day i travel out of Melbourne, Australia - will be on the day of the Full Moon in Virgo - which was intersting enuf as my moon IS in Virgo (natal chart).
So, im looking at all the dates - and i decided to scan thru to see where the moon would be when i come back, June 11 2006. And Lo, and behold, i looked - and its on a full moon - the date i return! How's that for coincidence or is everything really part of the universe's plan?

There will be no booze and no Bee Gees and visitors to this year's Anzac Day (April 25th ) commemorations at Gallipoli will be given garbage bags.

Announcing arrangements for the 91st anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Billson said the Australian, New Zealand and Turkish governments were united in their commitment to protect and preserve the former battlefield in Turkey.

Mr Billson, flanked by Turkish Ambassador Murat Ersavciand and RSL head Major General Bill Crews at the Australian War Memorial, said many lessons were learned in dealing with the record crowd who attended the 90th anniversary activities last year.

He said that had resulted in a number of improvements, with an updated transport plan to address road congestion, better food vending arrangements, improved seating and more toilets.

'Alcohol will be banned,' he said.

'The improvements should address many of last year's concerns and we will continue to give consideration as to how best to cater for the large crowds as we approach 2015, the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings.'

Mr Billson said last year there was a lot of rubbish left behind and this year members of the group Conservation Volunteers Australia would undertake a post-commemoration cleanup.

Last year there were concerns about playing big screen rock music videos to crowds waiting for the dawn service.

Such entertainment has been dropped from this year's program.

'The Bee Gees will not be at the commemorations,' Mr Billson said.

'Commemoration is a solemn occasion where reverence needs to be not only understood but displayed to the legends of Anzac, whether they be New Zealanders, Australians or Turkish.

"We feel that the spirit of Anzac and the significance of the time is best reflected and conveyed in educational, informative and interpretive material. That is what we are proposing with documentaries and the insights we will be screening throughout the night in the leadup to the dawn service."

Because of security concerns, there are no bins on the Gallipoli site and a consequence last year was a vast quantity of rubbish left behind when crowds departed.

This year the information pack handed to all visitors will contain a garbage bag to aid the cleanup.

The kit will also contain an order of service, information, souvenir badge and, depending on the weather forecast, a plastic poncho to protect against wind and rain.

Mr Billson said the Australian and Turkish governments had undertaken a joint archaeological and historical review of the Gallipoli Peninsular, identifying sites of significance.

He said both countries also promised to commit funds once a master plan of future works had been agreed.

Mr Billson said he did not believe the crowds attending Anzac Day on Gallipoli yet justified ticketing for the event.

"As we look forward to the centenary as crowds continue to swell, crowd management is an important issue," he said.

"There is room for improvement. We acknowledge that and there are steps in place to improve that this year and we will continue to see whether further measures are required."

my Passport : my first Australian passport. I havent had a passport for 21 years. Its a bit like holding a book of 'Freedom"

my AirTickets : saving for the tickets and the spending money has assured that all those years of money pinching whilst raising my kids solo - all came to use, again. Thank You to my MUM for reminding me that a Cent today is worth a million in the future :)

my Business Cards : i printed a new set of cards, with Ozdoof.com on one side and Psydjs.com on the other. This journey is another chapter of my dream of a sustainble lifestyle, the walk, steps i take daily in the belief of believing in ones dreams.

TRAVEL INSURANCE : best deals with comprehensive cover found!

The time has come for me to get myself some Travel Insurance for my 12 weeks travel covering from Australia to Europe and back. I was going to purchase it earlier, but decided to leave the money in the bank for the interest benefit :)

At first i was pretty set to get my Travel Insurance thru WorldNormad who are backed up by the Lonely Planet crew/website. It has a good price, $200 AUD for 3 months. However i needed to make sure that i had insurance on my digital camera and my laptop -- with WorldNomad i could get extra cover for the Loss of Personal Belongings, at $50 per item (added to base price of insurance) but it only covered up to $1000 per item. Which meant total price of quote would be $300 AUD ...

so i kept searching around to see if i could find a better deal...

And i think i have at 1Cover.com.au a Sydney based office -- with insurance backed by Allianz. Their comprehensive cover is at $247 AUD - for 3months in Europe area - and the personal loss/damage payout is $5000 - with up to $3000 for laptop and camera.
I downloaded their Policy Wordings (in pdf) - and read thru, and it seems alright. Some areas have access fee of $100

Here's a disturbing tale about security and your travel bags.

Two members of a Sydney family recently departed London Heathrow for home on different days, flying with different airlines. Mum arrives home first, only to discover that two mobile phones tossed into her suitcase at the last moment prior to departure are now missing.

Her teenage daughter follows from Heathrow a few days later. And when she arrives in Sydney she notices that plastic tags tied around the zips of her checked-in bag are now broken. A ski-mask placed on top of her clothes is gone.

In both cases persons unknown must have rifled through the bags and stolen the goods. This is most likely to have occurred at Heathrow although it's possible both thefts took place en-route or in Sydney.

The point, however, is not where these thefts might have occurred; it's that such things are happening at all.

It goes without saying that if someone can tamper with your luggage and take something out, then they can just as easily put something in, perhaps something dangerous. These two recent incidences suggest a serious security flaw in current baggage handling procedures.

Are these two unusual cases? Or is theft and tampering of aircraft luggage more widespread than we think? Have you had a similar recent experience, or do you know of one?

just at every corner:
a vendor selling sesame rings, here in front of the old streetcar which commutes between Taksim Place und Tünel Station all over the shopping street Istiklal Caddesi. This tram is not only a tourist attraction, but many citizens use it for faster transport, when the street is crowded with people. btw, at that time there was no chicken döner available

"Tourist guides say, you should be careful with every mobile vendor except those selling sesame rings. Acutally, it is just bread, so flour and water. What should happen anyway?
However, I wonder, who actually eats these amounts of food, offered nearly everywhere. And it is said only a few Turks (explicitly below 10%) suffer from overweight.

I did not try these ones here as it was shortly after breakfast, but I had one at another place and on the ferries. They are yummy and about 0,25 Euro ( = 0,4 new turkish Lira).

You might know *doner kebab*. That is probably, what we call Döner: a sort of Burger with bread outside filled with salad, usually green cabbage, yoghurt dressing and kebab meat from lamb or chicken

I dont know what the rest are going to do yet, but i presume they will get together with some of the others that would have arrived earlier and headed to Olympus and such -- as a pre gathering, as discussed in forums over the last months..

the gates will offically open March 26th, to allow the festivalers to start setting up their temporary homes ----- the party/music begins March 27..

Atatürk International Airport is located in Yeşilköy, 25 kms from Taksim. The new International Terminal is one of the busiest hubs in the region as a major transit point from East to West and. It also features Duty Free Shops in the Arrivals area so you can load up on cigarettes and liquor. Upon arriving, landing to customs is usually a quick process taking no more then 20 minutes to a half hour. Visas for U.S. and residents of EU countries can be obtained upon arrival. Departure is a more lengthy operation involving passing through extra security checks that could take up to 90 minutes.

Connections to the City

Transportation options from Atatürk Airport into town include:

Bus Shuttle – The Havaş bus company provides service from airport to Taksim Square and Taksim Square to airport, charge is 7.500.000 TL (5 USD-4.5 Euro-3 Pound) between 05.00-06.00 every hour, between 06.00-23.00 every half an hour.

The Havas buses depart from a bus stop located outside on the street at ground level at International Arrivals. They stop at the Sea Bus station Bakırköy (for transfers to Bostancı and Kadıköy on the Asian side), Aksaray and Taksim Square.

Thought i had initially planned on taking the bus/coach to from Istanbul to Antalya, today i booked a flight with Turkish Airlines.

I was told that it takes approx 13 hours on the bus - which wasnt an issue to me, as i wanted to absorb & view the country ( and take photos of course!) - however i was told that most the buses depart Istanbul around 8pm onwards... which meant most of the travel would be during the night ~ so not so much of a photo vantage there eh?

So i started checkin out current flights and WooHooo found some -- for 69 and 79 TYL (turkish lira) one way with Turkish Airlines and Onur Air

You can book and pay online too :)

im booked now to fly out of Istanbul international on Saturday 25th March @ 8.25am (gotta be at check in 1 hour before) - and will get into Antalya at 9.40am! Just over one hour flight - very good.

By the way its interesting to note that 79 Turkish lira converts to approx $80 Australian dollars (converted at Ozforex)

Atlasjet (or Atlas Jet) is a low-fare Turkish airline owned by two large Turkish tour operators, Etstur and Öger Tours.

Like Onur Air and Fly Air, it started as a charter airline flying tour participants from Europe to Turkey. Now it welcomes the general public to its flights, challenging the traditional national carrier, Turkish Airlines, and serves several internal Turkish routes.

Atlasjet operates daily flights from Istanbul to Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman, Erzincan, Izmir, Malatya, Siirt, Trabzon, and Van, as well as twice-weekly flights from Istanbul to northern (Turkish) Cyprus.

Fares on most of its flights are a
bout YTL89 (US$67), with some of its late-night fares as low as YTL49 (US$37)—almost as cheap as the bus! But check possibly expensive airport transfer costs as well.

The Atlasjet website has flight info, but no fares.

For fares and reservations you can telephone +90 (216) 444 0 387, and supposedly get that information in English. (Within Turkey, this is a toll-free/free-phone number: 444 0 387.)

The Atlasjet website appears to work in the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers, but not in Safari.

Fly Air (codes: F2, FAO) is a Turkish airline flying several useful domestic routes in Turkey, and flies them at very low fares.

Turkish Airlines and Onur Air are better-known airlines serving Turkish domestic routes, but you might consider Fly Air also. They fly between Istanbul and Adana, Antalya, Bodrum, Izmir and Trabzon, with more cities to come.

Fares range from YTL46 (middle-of-the-night flights) to YTL89 (convenient daytime flights), plus airport taxes.

Be sure to look into airport transfer costs as well.

Interestingly, you can buy Fly Air tickets at the nearly 1000 Turkish post offices (PTT, Posta Telgraf) with internet connections!

The Fly Air website is useful for getting flight information (not all discount airline websites are useful, by the way).

Antalya, one of the most breath-taking places of Turkey, because of its spectacular location between the Taurus Mountains rising to 3086 meters just behind the coastline and the sparkling Mediterranean. The total solar eclipse occurs on March 29, 2006.

This will be a spectacular eclipse, lasting over 4 minutes at maximum and visible over a path up to 190 km wide.

The shadow of the Moon will sweep a band starting Brazil, through Atlantic Ocean, Gold coast of Africa, Saharan desert, Mediterranean Sea, Turkey, Black Sea, Georgia, Russia, northern shores of Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan and ending in Mongolia.

Turkey is one of the most suitable countries from which the eclipse will be visible. Antalya and its districts together with Cappadocia and eastern Black Sea will be directly at the path's center.

Antalya, located at the Mediterranean coast is one of the luckiest places for this event because of its sunny climate.

The total eclipse in Turkey will begin at 09:40 LT will end at 12:20 LT. The complete solar eclipse will be at 11:04 LT.

This is a fantastic chance to see a great eclipse for most of Europeans in particular, as it will be their last easy chance to see a total eclipse of the sun in midland Europe until 2026. The next total eclipse in Eurasia is August 1, 2008. The major North American eclipse is on August 21 2017.

NASA suggested a trip to Antalya to astronomy enthusiasts on March 29, 2006. Since the eclipse occurs in midday in Antalya, Egypt and Libya the difference between darkness and light will be more.

All road and highways are well connected and well maintained to every part of Turkey. Coming from Europe to the Turkish border in the west at EDIRNE straight on highway E-80, through to Istanbul and Ankara. Following on highway E-80, crossing of the Bosphorus to Asia has been greatly speeded up Istanbul by-pass with 2 bridges of ATATURK BRIDGE and FATIH BRIDGE, leading to the Istanbul-Izmit express road.

By the other side; 3 great axis highways traversing Turkey are those to Syria and the Lebanon(Highway E-5), Iraq (Highway E-24) and Iran highway E-23). The route to Antalya follows the E-80 to IZMIT and then heads south.

If you will drive in Turkey an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.
In Turkey traffic circulates on the right and the Turkish Highway Code is similar to those of Western countries. Outside urban areas speed limited to 90 kph(~55 mph)

Drive defensively at all times. Turkey has one of the highest accident rates in the world. Fatal road accidents occur frequently. Avoid inter city driving after dark. The holidays, or BAYRAMs, like one of that follow month of Ramadan(RAMAZAN) are accompanied by a dramatic increase in traffic and the highest accident rates of the year. Driving times to Istanbul, from Ankara,7 hours and from Antalya is 12 hours.

Traveler can also reach Turkey by vehicle ferries. The Turkish Maritime Lines operates luxury service ferries for people whom travel with their own vehicles, from VENICE and BRINDISI to IZMIR/Çesme.

ÇESME is eastern point of Izmir peninsula and about 150 km north of Kusadasi. Road to Kusadasi from Çesme is in very good condition.

By the other side; Turkey has vast system of inter city coaches. Buses between big cities are inexpensive, convenient and amazingly modern. Ticket prices varies slightly, depending on service quality. Practically most fares are about US$4 per 100 kilometers(61 miles).

Every big city in Turkey has at least one bus station (OTOGAR). All the bus companies have a ticket office at the bus stations, and the larger companies have offices dotted around towns or cities center. In small towns coaches depart from town's main square area.

Istanbul International Bus Terminal (BÜYÜK OTOGAR) is located at European side of the city and it is 10 km (6 miles) west of the west of Sultanahmet at ESENLER / BAYRAMPASA district.

Most of the major inter city companies have free shuttle transportation from different parts of the districts to the main bus station. Buses are so frequent and run everywhere day and night, even cross-country but you need reserve in advance especially around holidays.

Within the city of Istanbul, public transport is a good way of getting around. There are minibuses(dolmus), both city and private buses , taxis, trams (from Aksaray), subway(METRO) between Taksim and Levent, and a tiny electric tram car 'TÜNEL' (between Karakoy to Tunel). Dial (212)568-9970 for metro and tramway information in Istanbul, if you need. In Istanbul bus and tram tickets runs about $0.50 ea. USD.

Istanbul has a large fleet of yellow taxis, but a cheaper way of getting around the streets is to hire a dolmus, a shared taxi or minibus. It's an easy matter to rent a car; it's navigating the thing through the insane traffic that might prove to be difficult. Save it for excursions out of town.

The subway(METRO) of Istanbul project is still going on and the completed lines allow you to travel fast and inexpensively between Airport, the main inter city bus terminal(OTOGAR), and famous Sultanahmet Square if you transfer on foot between the AKSARAY and YUSUFPASA stations.

The DOLMUS, a special transportation service found only in Turkey, is a collective taxi or mini-bus(Van) follows specific routes and is recognizable by its yellow band. Each passenger pays according to the distance traveled and can get off at almost in any place possible.

Also DOLMUS provides a service within large cities, to suburbs, airports and often to neighboring towns. This is very commune and practical transportation service and it is slightly more than the regular buses but much more cheaper than the taxi cab.

Money in Turkey

Money:
As of January 1st, 2005, Turkey has its new lira.

The currency system in Turkey has changed and during 2005 both the old money with many zeros and the new Turkish liras can be used. In the old currency 6 zeros has been removed and The new lira (YTL) is formed. In order not to create any confusion, the new banknotes has the same color and same style with the old ones.

Due to high inflation of more than 25 years and no change of currency, Turkish money was having the most number of zeros in the world. So many zeros might cause a conflict in the beginning but its one of the only place where even a backpacker can feel himself a millionaire :). As zeros can cause conflict, In order to prevent from any mistakes, its much advised to remember the banknotes with its colors.

Nowadays when you visit a shop, you may see prices in two different format. Either with many zeros or the new Turkish lira form (YTL). For example 15,000,000 Lira or 15 YTL (New Turkish lira). Don't be confused, both are the same and during the year 2005 all prices will be displayed with the old and the new currency at the same time.

Money Exchange :
Should I exchange money before I go to Istanbul?

I suggest not. Many foreign banks abroad do use a quiet lower rate than its in Turkey. Turkish currency is easily obtainable upon arrival in Istanbul at any exchange office or bank 24 hrs. Daily exchange rates can be obtained from the Turkish Central Bank web site at www.tcmb.gov.tr. This site is in both Turkish and English, and gives links to all Turkish Banks. Turkish daily newspapers also publish daily rates.

There is no limit to the amount of foreign currency that may be brought into Turkey, but not more than $5,000 worth of Turkish currency may be brought into or taken out of the country.

I suggest to bring your ATM card and Credit cards, instead of carrying banknotes with you. There are thousands of ATM machines all around Istanbul. Credit cards are widely accepted by hotels, restaurants and most merchants. Travelers cheque are also accepted but not as frequent as credit cards. In touristy places, in case you need, you can shop with Euro or Dollar, but carrying Turkish banknotes shall always be preferred.

Turkish banknotes can be obtained from Banks, Post offices and Exchange offices. Do not ex-change your money on the street. Especially the old Turkish Lira has many zeros that could easily creates confusion, and when you exchange besides exchange offices and banks, you may face with problems.

Istanbul's weather is hot in summer and rather cold and rainy in winters. Depending on the season arrange your clothes, but before you pack do not forget to bring comfortable shoes. You will be walking in Istanbul quiet a lot. If you plan to use electrical equipments, Turkey uses 220 V, 50hz electricity system with two pins. If your home voltage and frequency is different, I advice to bring your adapters with you for your electrical equipments..

As most tourists stay at the old Istanbul Peninsula, now there is an easy and convenient way of transport. The new rail system has reached to the airport and you can travel easily by this means of transport..

You can choose in between Metro, Airport shuttle services and taxis depending on your destination and your budget. If you are going to stay at Touristy peninsula (Aksaray, Sultanahmed) Metro and tram connection is a good alternative. If you are going to stay at Taksim, Beyoglu or nearby, you should think of Airport Shuttle or Taxis. If you are going to take a City bus from Istanbul, Metro also goes directly to the Main bus terminal.

By Metro:
After the arriving hall, when you go outside the main building, there you will see stairs down to the Metro stop.. In every 5 minutes there is a Metro running to Aksaray and the Touristy area starts from there. Metro operates between 06:00 to 24:00 hrs. The cost is 1,1 YTL (around 0,8USD.) And tokens can be obtained from the Airport metro station.

When you reached the last stop of Metro (Aksaray station), exit from the metro station, you will see the signs of the Tramline. You shall walk around 100 meters, Tramline is just a head of Metro station. You will arrive to 'Yusufpasa station' of the Tram line. You shall get on the Eminonu Line which is on the other side of the pedestrian passage. Tram tokens can be obtained in every stop and the cost is again 1,1 YTL.

Trams are passing in every 5 minutes. And they have a good air condition system. When you get on the tram the first stop is Aksaray, there are several hotels in this district, Watch out for yrs. The next stop is the University, followed by Beyazit and cemberlitas. Afterwards you will be in Sultanahmet square anot"

By bus: Bus network in Turkiye is very well developed. You can reach almost all cities and towns from other cities and towns. Each city or town has their own bus terminals and travels are mainly operated from bus terminals. In Istanbul there are two Bus terminals each on one continent. The bus terminal in Esenler is the biggest and there is also one on the Asian side at Harem. Both terminals are used by bus companies."

The three reliable operating companies are Varan , Ulusoy and "BOSS".. And if they have no buses to your connection "Kamil koc", "Pamukkale", "Uludag" or "Metro" can also be chosen.

Varan & Ulusoy do not use the Istanbul main bus terminal, besides they have sub stations.
"BOSS" has very high quality service and probably the most pricy one, however you shall travel alone in a leather covered seat as seen on picture.

Note: Many bus companies has special call center lines which starts with "444 XX XX", which can be reached all around Turkey as local calls.

In 2005, Leon did one of the cheap bus tours, without Mirjam, but with lots of elderly people. Family hotels and bus tours ? Not the things we usually do on our holidays. Somewhere in the 19th century, a British tourist and researcher found out that ppl in Istanbul in the vicinity of the Royal hill (Sultanahmet) are getting water from holes made in the floors of their houses.
Knowing it's in fact a rocky hill it seemed very strange to him. Being an adventurer, he took candles and ropes and let himself down, into one of those "domestic wells".
This is what he found, A huge water cistern (bigger than a couple of football fields), built during the times of Iustinian, the Byzantine emperor, using parts and ruins of old greek temples.
If you are adventurous enough, you should know there are more of them, undiscovered to this day!

Are vaccinations necessary when travelling to developed countries?

As a general rule, I advise all travellers to visit their local doctor regardless of overseas destination. Although developed countries generally pose no more health threats than travel within Australia, there are a few exceptions. Some of the following may be recommended:

* Routine vaccinations - childhood vaccines should be brought up to date if required. Boosters for tetanus and diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis) and polio may be advised. Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine should be given if you were born after 1965 and have not received a second dose of the MMR vaccine. Meningococcal C, hepatitis B and chicken pox vaccines are now part of the routine list recommended by the NHMRC.
* Influenza - this is a significant risk to travellers to Europe and USA, and is a year-round risk in tropical areas. A vaccination could save you from a wasted week of recuperation.
* Pneumonia - may also be advisable for higher risk groups.
* Hepatitis A - The Centre for Disease Control, Atlanta USA advises there is some risk in Southern Europe and the countries bordering the Mediterranean, as well as in Portugal.
* Hepatitis B - a vaccine is recommended for those planning a long extended trip and if you may be sexually active with new partners.
* Rabies - consider if cycling around Eastern Europe in particular.

It's a good idea to take a broad spectrum antibiotic with you (which requires a prescription) to cover, for example, an infected cut, sinusitis or cystitis. ERL is the fastest way of getting to KLIA from KL centre. It takes a mere 30min to the airport as compared to 55min by car. Great when you're short of time, and if taxi fares are out of your budget!

The Express Rail links the KLSentral with KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport). The check-in and ticket counter are on Level 1 of the KLSentral complex and also at Level 1 of the KLIA complex. Flight passengers are also able to check-in their baggages at the check-in counter just like you would at the airport. The baggage will be tagged to your flight destination.

OKAY. Locating the ERL ticketing counters at the airport is a nightmare! The signs directing passengers to the ekspress rail counters are atrocious so follow these instructions carefully otherwise you'll be spending many hours searching for the counters. From the departure and arrival halls, follow the signs for KLIA express. Take the glass lifts on the far side which has KLIA express stickers pasted on the doors. Situated between Finike and Kas.Myra is 25 km. from Finike and 48 km from Kas.It was one of the most important cities among the other six Lykian cities.It was settled in the 5th century BC.Although it was originaly a coastal town,it has retreated from the sea because of the alluvium from the Demre stream.It was abandoned in the 9th century AD. after the Arab invasion.The rock tombs,the theatre and St.Nicholas church have survived to make it a place worth visiting.
