airport by tram to Sultanahmet,, Istanbul, Turkey

Miscellaneous Tips, Istanbul, Turkey:

"When you come from the airport by tram to Sultanahmet, you must make a transfer at Zeytinburnu. You will have to get down at that stop, GO OUT of the station, cross the bridge and ENTER AGAIN at the other line station. So you will have to buy another jetton (1 million liras). "

Money and Costs | Turkey Travel Information | Lonely Planet Destination Guide: "Money Tips

Turkey is a relatively low-slung dollar burner. You can travel on as little as YTL20.00 to YTL30.00 per day using buses and trains, staying in pensions, and eating one restaurant meal. For YTL30.00 to YTL45.00 you can travel on plusher buses, take well-cushioned train seats, kick back in one and two-star hotels and eat most meals in restaurants. For more than YTL50.00 per day you can move up to 3 and 4-star hotels, take the occasional airline flight, and dine in restaurants all the time.

Prices in İstanbul and along the coast are higher than in Cappadocia and elsewhere inland."

How to travel by train from London to Istanbul & Turkey

How to travel by train from London to Istanbul & Turkey:

"Istanbul is one of the most wonderful cities in Europe, where east really does meet west. Can you still travel there by train from London or Paris..? Of course you can..! The train journey to Istanbul is perfectly feasible, safe, and an adventure. It's very civilised and comfortable, too, as long as you book a sleeper. The journey takes three nights, just as it always has, and departures from London are daily. Naturally, a London-Istanbul train journey will cost more than the air fare, as it involves a three day adventure with accommodation right across Europe, rediscovering some of the mystery, intrigue and romance of long-distance sleeping-car travel across Europe. This page will explain the train times, approximate fares and how to book."

How to Buy a Backpack Cover - eHow.com

How to Buy a Backpack Cover - eHow.com: "How to Buy a Backpack Cover

You'll need a pack cover for backpacking in the rain, regardless of how adamantly the manufacturer insists your backpack is waterproof. Pack covers are also good for protecting gear while you are setting up camp in a downpour.

Steps:
1. Thumb through a couple of reputable outdoor magazines for equipment reviews and articles about equipment purchases to find out the most recommended models and manufacturers of pack covers.

2. Look for simplicity over features - with a sudden downpour, you want to be able to get your pack covered as quickly as possible. The simplest covers are made of waterproof nylon and attach to the pack with a cord.

3. Make certain the cover is large enough to fit your pack after everything has been strapped on to it.

4. Consider purchasing a reversible cover with an international orange side if you will be backpacking during hunting season.

5. Buy a reputable brand from a reputable outdoor company, and make sure there is a return policy and warranty in case you have a problem."

GETTING AROUND in Vienna, Austria

BUG - Backpackers Guide to Vienna, Austria: "Vienna
Coming & Going

Vienna is well placed as an essential transit point on many routes between eastern and western Europe, with frequent bus, rail and air connections to destinations throughout Europe.
TRAIN

Vienna has several train stations. Westbahnhof is the main station with trains to Hungary, western Austria and most of western and northern Europe.

Sdbahnhof is another major station with trains to Berlin, Italy and Eastern Europe.

Smaller stations inlcude Franz Josefs Bahnhof, Wien Mitte and Wien Nord. These stations handle mostly local suburban and regional trains.

Franz Josefs Bahnhof has a daily train to Prague, plus trains to Krems and the Wachau region.

Wien Mitte and Wien Nord both handle suburban and regional trains including S-Bahn trains to the airport.
BUS

Most buses, including Eurolines and Bundesbus services, depart from the Wien Mitte Autobusbahnhof located at Landstrasser Hauptstrasse 1/B next to the Wien Mitte train station.

Columbus operate buses between Vienna and Prague, departing from Rathausplatz 5. Get information and tickets from the Columbus office at Dr Karl Lueger Ring 8 (tel (01) 534 111 23).
AIR

Vienna's international airport, Flughafen Wien-Schwechat (VIE; website english.viennaairport.com) is around 20km south-east of the city centre.

The City Airport Train (website www.cityairporttrain.at) is the easiest and quickest way to travel between the airport and the centre of Vienna. The one-way fare is €8.
HITCHHIKING

Like any other big city, it's a good idea to take public transport to a major road on the outskirts of town to avoid local and suburban traffic. Take the U-Bahn (line U4) to Unter St Veit for lifts west of Vienna.

If you're looking for a more organised form of hitching you could try the ride sharing agency at 08, Danngasse 1a (tel (01) 408 2210).

Austria - BUG - Backpackers Guide to Europe

BUG - Backpackers Guide to Europe: "Austria

Stuck in the middle of Europe, Austria conjures up images of The Sound of Music. This beautiful alpine country is also home to the cultural centres of both Salzburg and Vienna which have nurtured the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss.

Nowadays Austria's big cities are alive with the sound of the different beat although the villages of the picturesque Tirol and Vorarlberg regions retain their unique ambience despite the tourist hordes which descend each winter for the ski season.

Austria is an important part of every traveller's itinerary whether you're interested in nature or the big city or just passing through enroute from western to eastern Europe.

Vienna

Vienna is one of Europe's great capitals with an old town surrounded by monumental buildings which include the Hofburg and many world-class museums. Other attractions include the Belvedere and Schönbrunn palaces.

The city has much more to offer than museums and impressive buildings. Vienna is also a city with a strong cultural tradition with its famous coffee houses and wine taverns.

Practical Information

The tourist office has the usual array of brochures and also sells the Vienna Card.

If you're planning to spend a few days here, it is well worth buying the Vienna Card. The card costs €16.90, includes 72 hours use of Vienna's public transport network and offers discounts on around 100 museums, sights, theatres, wine taverns, etc. The Vienna Card is available from U-Bahn stations, tourist information centres and hotels.

In Viennese addresses, the first numbers represent the postal code and refer to the neighbourhood and the latter number refers to the street number.

Turkey and Romania impose bird flu cull - World - theage.com.au: "Turkey and Romania culled thousands of birds and imposed quarantine zones today to try to stop the spread of avian flu as scientists worked to discover if the outbreaks could be the deadly H5N1 strain.
