Amasya - Turkey

Amasya is one of the provinces in Central Anatolia of Turkey which is distinct both with its natural setup and historical values it holds. It was the homeland of the famous geographer Strabo. Located in a narrow cleft of the Yesilirmak (Iris) river, it has a past of 3000 years during which many civilizations left priceless remains of their times.

The ruins of the citadel on the rock face of the cleft shelters 2000 year old water-channels, 1000 year old bridges, a mental hospital, an Ottoman Palace and a secret underground passageway. On the rock faces there are impressive rock tombs of the Pontus kings, which contribute very much to the attractiveness of the city. At night, when they are illuminated, the view is unforgettable.

The city also has many historically and architecturally precious buildings; the Ferhat water channel, the 13th century Seljuk Burmali Mosque, the 15th century Yildirim Beyazit Mosque and Complex; the 14th century Ilhanli Bimarhane Mental Hospital with lovely relieves around its portal, the extraordinary octagonal Kapi Aga Medrese (theological school), the Torumtay Mausoleum and the Gk Medrese. There are traditional Turkish mansions which have been well-preserved showing the best examples of Turkish architecture. The 19th century Hazeranlar Mansion has been restored perfectly and now it is of great interest with an art gallery on its first floor and an ethnographical museum on the second. The Archaeological Museum of Amasya has an interesting collection including the mummies of the Ilhanli rulers of Amasya.

traditional mansions on Yesilirmak riverAs for natural beauty, Amasya is set apart from the rest of Anatolia in its tight mountain valley and hides its own secret beauty. Lake Borabay (65 kms northeast of Amasya) is a crater lake with an amazing view and fresh air. It is a perfect area for fishing (especially trout), for picnicking and for being alone with nature and doing some sports. Yedikir Dam Lake and Omarca National Park are other excursion sites. Terzikoy spa center, a thermal resort, is also worth a visit.

Amasya was also one of the Turkish cities which had the best viewing location for the last total solar eclipse of the 20th century which happened on 11th August 1999. Many visitors came to the city to witness this spectacular event. Now, on 29th March 2006, there will be another total solar eclipse in this city wich can be seen at 14:06pm local time.

Bright Sun, Strong Tea: Then and Now

In the evening during Ramazan the Istanbul city government sponsored special concerts, amusements and shows. All the mosques were floodlit and packed with worshippers and sightseers in a holiday mood. The ancient Hippodrome was engulfed in a carnival atmosphere with strings of colored lights and little booths selling snacks, crafts, religious books, trinkets, and souvenirs. There were smiles everywhere.

Imagine a month in which denial of small pleasures during daylight helps you to consider life's big, important questions. It's no wonder Muslims look upon Ramazan as a blessing: it helps them to prioritize, to discover what's important and what isn't, to figure out what we're all doing here–in short, to ponder the meaning of life.

Know the World

Not to be reached by traveling is the end of the world,
Yet there is no release from sorrow
Unless you reach the end of the world.
The one who is wise and lives a loving life
Begins to know the world.
That one will go to the world’s end.
And then he will neither long for this world
Nor for any world.

Nomads (Yoruks)

Nomads (Yoruks): "Though the life of the yrks is becoming less nomadic in modern Turkey and they are losing many of their traditions, they still make superb kilims with patterns and colors particular to the clan and region they belong to. The dress of these nomadic herdmen has changed and though you still see some in the black shaggy goats-hair capes, more and more have adopted western style dress. The women more traditionally wear the 'salvar', the baggy trousers and short jacket, usually in a floral material, and on their heads a scarf cleverly arranged and knotted so it looks almost like a hat."

Total Solar Eclipse of 2006 March 29

Total Solar Eclipse of 2006 March 29: "On Wednesday, 2006 March 29, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor which traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in Brazil and extends across the Atlantic, northern Africa, and central Asia where it ends at sunset in western Mongolia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and central Asia."

Whirling Dervishes

Whirling Dervishes: "The rituals of the Rumi's followers (Whirling Dervishes) are among the enduring as well as the most exquisite ceremonies of spirituality. The ritual whirling of the dervishes is an act of love and a drama of faith. It possesses a highly structured form within which the gentle turns become increasingly dynamic as the individual dervishes strive to achieve a state of trans. The music that accompanies the whirling from beginning to end ranges from somber to rapsodical; its effect is intended to be mesmerizing. Chanting of poetry, rhythmic rotation, and incessant music create a synthesis which, according to the faithful, induces a feeling of soaring, of ecstasy, of mystical flight."

Sufism

Sufism: "Each person is a unique representative of the Divine. The Sufis say, 'If human beings knew their own inner secrets, never would they look elsewhere for seeking happiness, peace and inner light.' Therefore the essence of the Path is to find oneself. 'Know thyself, know thy Lord!' is an imperative of the Sufi Way."

Tent to Turkey - the Eclipse Experience

i worked out ive got to save at least $10 day if i want to see the eclipse in Turkey next year..
That should get me about $4500 by then, and half will go to airfares alone *err*

so ive got to get my sh*t together, if i want to achieve this for self! I never put it down seriously that id get the the my first eclipse experience, but it happened, infact it fell into place so well... it was like i was practically carried there.. thru ozdoof, and all the stuff i do *dooferologist*.

this time, theres's no real Festival (psy) confirmed as such, anywhere - rumours it will happen in Brazil, or maybe even Egypt. For some reason, im being strong pulled to Turkey.
Maybe its cuz of my family roots, and also how ive also been pulled to Sufism -- which is SO like olden days doof i reckonz, hehe!!

and i keep hearing that its so beautiful. there, though ive dont really know what the place looks like to even imagine.

This blog has been started so that i can plan, write my thoughts about this 'goal' - this dream that i conjure, and seriously think i can do it, whilst one part of me ..scoffs at self, like - *yeah, right..not!*.
Ive got LOTS of research, saving, and getting my shit. plus the kids together -- but its a good goal.. and i feel all will be richer in so many ways...... and the end of it..

write more later ~
