Pictures of Turkey - by BamJam Productions: <- click

"We've been three times in Turkey for now. The first time was in 2003, when we stayed in Alanya, a great place for families with children. In 2005, Leon did one of the cheap bus tours, without Mirjam, but with lots of elderly people. Family hotels and bus tours ? Not the things we usually do on our holidays. That's why we came back later in 2005, and had a walking holiday in Cappadocia. That's more like it !!"

good photos with good basic info - to give you and idea if you want to - should - check these places out whilst in Turkey.

Ierebatan Sarayi Istanbul

Ierebatan Sarayi Istanbul
Originally uploaded by Baracute.

Somewhere in the 19th century, a British tourist and researcher found out that ppl in Istanbul in the vicinity of the Royal hill (Sultanahmet) are getting water from holes made in the floors of their houses.
Knowing it's in fact a rocky hill it seemed very strange to him. Being an adventurer, he took candles and ropes and let himself down, into one of those "domestic wells".
This is what he found, A huge water cistern (bigger than a couple of football fields), built during the times of Iustinian, the Byzantine emperor, using parts and ruins of old greek temples.
If you are adventurous enough, you should know there are more of them, undiscovered to this day!

Scenes From Turkey: Whirling Dervishes

Scenes From Turkey: Whirling Dervishes:

Whirling is one of the tools used by Sufis (Islamic mystics) to come closer to Allah, but it's not the only one. Different orders of Sufis apply different practices, including whirling, zikr, and others.

The vast majority of whirling dervishes in Turkey trace their spiritual roots to Celaleddin Mevlâna Rumi, who founded the Mevlevi Sufi order in the 13th century. 'Mevlâna' means 'guide', or 'master'. 'Rumi' means 'from the Sultanate of Rum'

departing travellers from Australia

departing travellers:

Carrying expensive items

If you are departing Australia with expensive items (such as computers, cameras and video cameras) and you intend to bring them back to Australia, register these items on the Goods Exported in Passenger Baggage form at the end of this section. You cannot use this form if you intend claiming a refund under the Tourist Refund Scheme. The goods registered must be easily identifiable; serial numbers etc must be included.

If possible, goods are to be carried in hand baggage and the officer who performs your immigration clearance at the outwards control point will check the goods and validate your form by signing and stamping it. If items are too large to be carried and must be included in your hold baggage, contact the closest Customs office for advice on where the goods may be inspected.

Once registered, you do not need to declare these articles to Customs on your return to Australia but you should keep the registration form handy in case Customs has any questions.

For jewellery and other goods not readily identifiable, carrying proof of ownership in the form of receipts or insurance documents will help if you are questioned about the goods on return.

You may take any personal goods out of Australia without having to pay duty/tax on these goods when you return (other than items that you purchased duty/tax free in Australia before your trip and which are in excess of your duty free concession).

Goods purchased duty or tax free in Australia must be taken with you and inspected at the departure point. You may also need to declare these on your return (See Duty free Allowances)

Travel vaccinations and medications - Q & A

Travel vaccinations and medications - Q & A:

Are vaccinations necessary when travelling to developed countries?

As a general rule, I advise all travellers to visit their local doctor regardless of overseas destination. Although developed countries generally pose no more health threats than travel within Australia, there are a few exceptions. Some of the following may be recommended:

* Routine vaccinations - childhood vaccines should be brought up to date if required. Boosters for tetanus and diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis) and polio may be advised. Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine should be given if you were born after 1965 and have not received a second dose of the MMR vaccine. Meningococcal C, hepatitis B and chicken pox vaccines are now part of the routine list recommended by the NHMRC.
* Influenza - this is a significant risk to travellers to Europe and USA, and is a year-round risk in tropical areas. A vaccination could save you from a wasted week of recuperation.
* Pneumonia - may also be advisable for higher risk groups.
* Hepatitis A - The Centre for Disease Control, Atlanta USA advises there is some risk in Southern Europe and the countries bordering the Mediterranean, as well as in Portugal.
* Hepatitis B - a vaccine is recommended for those planning a long extended trip and if you may be sexually active with new partners.
* Rabies - consider if cycling around Eastern Europe in particular.

It's a good idea to take a broad spectrum antibiotic with you (which requires a prescription) to cover, for example, an infected cut, sinusitis or cystitis. This may save an unsettling experience, particularly in a non-English speaking country. Legionnaires' disease is more common in some Mediterranean countries.

About WhichBudget, Europe's largest budget airlines directory

About WhichBudget, Europe's largest budget airlines directory: "WhichBudget is Europe's largest directory of budget airlines, featuring dozens of airlines from around Europe. The demand for cheap flights has seen the huge rise in the number of no-frills airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet, which offer cheap tickets for flights between smaller European airports, making well known city break and beach holiday destinations more cheaply accessible and opening up new, previously less known destinations. Most importantly, they have started a new fashion for budget travel. People are no longer going on one or two holidays a year, but frequently escaping for a weekend away, or have bought second properties in sunny destinations, or are just seeing the business sense of travelling budget instead of business-class.

Gone are the days when airlines such as British Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Swissair, etc. dominated the European skies, charging a small fortune on air fares. If you are just looking for a cheap ticket for a weekend in Paris, Barcelona, Dublin or Amsterdam or for a sunny break on Spanish Costas or the French Riviera, and you don't care about inflight meals, complimentary drinks and pre-bookable seats, welcome to the world of budget airlines.

With so many airlines now offering cheap flights and with the number of new destinations constantly increasing, a traveller who just wants to get away for a weekend, or spend a week in the sunnier climes, or is on a strict budget for a business flight has to spend a considerable time browsing through a multitude of routes for each airline. WhichBudget brings all the airlines and all the routes in one place. You want to know where you could fly to from Stansted? Or, you would like to see all the airlines which fly to Barcelona? Just choose the departure/destination airport on WhichBudget and we will consolidate all the flights that you are looking for in one place."
